Before becoming Hemdale, the entire original lineup was active under the name Choke. They released a self-titled demo in 1993, 10 songs with pro-printed glossy fold-out covers and tapes with printed shells, but changed their name later in 1993, probably to avoid confusion with the other Ohio-based Death Metal band Choke who's debut demo came out in 1992.

The band signed to Relapse Records when Visceral Productions went under, and the album "Jerry's Massage Parlor" (that was promoted for years on end...) was to be released, but never came to be.

Also appeared on "Four Dollar Ohio Kings" compilation LP with two songs that have never been released ever since (although a different recording of one of these songs was on "Hemdale" demo and the "Rad Jackson" CD). A song "Fallen Upon Butchery" was recorded and released on the Relapse Records compilation "Solid"; this too was not included in any form on Rad Jackson. Of these 3 compilation tracks none were ever released again. Although "Consumed Abortion" was re-recorded for the "Hemdale" demo and included on "Rad Jackson" (with the rest of that demo), the compilation version has never been released again.

Craig Rowe owned and operated the record label Visceral Productions and gave over many of its bands (Exhumed, Hemdale, Nile & Skinless) to Relapse Records when it was ended.
